On September 18, 2006 the City Council adopted a comprehensive environmental Green City Action Plan (GCAP) based on 21 specific actions identified in the United Nations Green Cities Declaration and Urban Environmental Accords (UEA). The Green City Action Plan identifies specific initiatives for improving urban design, water and air quality, traffic congestion, waste reduction, parks and open space, energy conservation and environmental health. The progressive action plan was developed by an interdepartmental “Green Team” which was formed at the beginning of 2006. Upon adoption of the Green City Action Plan, the City Manager directed the Green Team to continue as a standing staff committee to monitor progress, ensure completion of the sustainability initiatives, and to provide support to the newly formed Environmental Advisory Commission.
