Lower Arroyo MapThe Arroyo Seco is on the western edge of the City of Pasadena and extends 8 miles through the City. This segment is a part of a longer 22 mile corridor that makes up the entire Arroyo Seco, a major tributary of the Los Angeles River. It is the City’s largest natural open space and physically described as a deeply cut canyon linking the San Gabriel Mountains to the Los Angeles River containing the intermittent stream for which it is named. The Arroyo Seco meanders south through the canyon and past various cities, joins the Los Angeles River, and continues on to the Pacific Ocean.  As the Arroyo Seco stream flows through Pasadena, it passes through three distinct geographical areas: Hahamongna Watershed Park, the Central Arroyo, and the Lower Arroyo.

Arroyo Seco Master Plans

The importance of the Arroyo Seco as a valued resource to the City of Pasadena prompted the need for the Arroyo Seco Master Plans. The Arroyo Seco Master Plans comprise of a set of four separate planning documents that portray a community vision for one of the regions most valued resources, the Arroyo Seco. The creation of the Arroyo Seco Master Plans is the result of a broad-based community effort that included a long list of stakeholders.

The four planning documents that make up the Arroyo Seco Master Plans are the:

  • Hahamongna Watershed Park Master Plan (HWP)
  • Central Arroyo Master Plan (CAMP)
  • Lower Arroyo Master Plan (LAMP)
  • Design Guidelines for the Arroyo Seco

The Design Guidelines for the Arroyo Seco were adopted on April 14, 2003. The Hahamongna Watershed Park Master Plan and the Lower Arroyo Master Plan were adopted on September 29, 2003. The Central Arroyo Master Plan was adopted on September 26, 2005.

”Text Only” versions of these documents are provided below. Copies of the final documents are available for purchase by contacting the City. Completed final versions (with graphics) of each of these documents will be provided here soon. A free CD containing all of these documents is also being prepared and will be available upon request in the very near future.
