Paul C. Jennings (Chair)
Dr. Paul C. Jennings received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from
Colorado State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, also in civil
engineering, from the California Institute of Technology. After serving on
the faculty of the U.S. Air Force Academy, he joined the Caltech faculty
in 1966. Dr. Jennings has held several administrative positions at the
Caltech, including chairman of the Division of Engineering and Applied
Science (1985-1989), Vice President and Provost (1989-1995), and twice served as
acting vice president of
business and finance (1995 and 1998-1999). In August of 2004, he was once
again appointed as Caltech’s provost and currently serves in this
capacity.
Professor Jennings is a member of the National Academy of Engineering,
past president of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, and the Seismological Society of America, and a Fellow and
past chair of the California Council on Science and Technology. He is the
author of numerous technical studies on the damaging effects of strong
earthquake motion and the dynamics of earthquake response and has served
as a consultant on many major projects, including high-rise buildings,
offshore drilling towers and nuclear power plants.
Dr. Jennings was appointed as a member of the Governor’s Board of Inquiry
on the Loma Prieta earthquake. He has served on various committees of the
National Academy of Engineering, including chairing the Draper Prize
Committee. Professor Jennings is a Fellow of the American Association for
the Advancement of Science, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the
New Zealand National Society for Earthquake Engineering, and currently
serves as chair of the Institutional Board of Pacific Earthquake Engineering
Research Center (1996-present).
His awards include the Newmark Medal and the Huber Prize of the American
Society of Civic Engineers and the Honor Alumnus and Achievement in
Academia Awards from Colorado State University.
