Biography

Victor M. Gordo, Esq. Biography

Victor GordoVictor M. Gordo de Arteaga, born October 22, 1969, in Zacatecas, Mexico, arrived in the United States at the age of five, and together with his family, has lived in Pasadena ever since. Victor is a proud product of the Pasadena Unified School District, having graduated from Pasadena High School in 1987.

He became the first person in his family to attend college when he enrolled, first, at Pasadena City College and, later, at Azusa Pacific University. In college, Victor studied Business Management and Finance. While working his way through college, he also worked as a waiter and restaurant manager, among other places at what was the Rose City Diner. Later, Victor taught junior-high at High Point Academy. After college Victor went on to serve as Program Director for the Day One Community Partnership. At Day One, Victor brought together over 100 agencies to create Youth Month, and served as its first chair. Youth Month continues to provide Pasadena young people with over 300 free activities during each month of August, when schools are closed and kids have little to do. He also worked closely with residents to rid their neighborhoods of irresponsible and problematic bars and liquor stores.

Victor began his service to Pasadena’s District 5 in 1997, when then Vice Mayor Bill Crowfoot invited him to serve as Field Representative for the district. Victor accepted the challenge and from 1997 to 2001 he successfully handled many kinds of constituent issues, from problems affecting a small number of people to citywide concerns, of key importance to the Vice Mayor.

How is the Vice Mayor elected?

At the organizational meeting on the first Monday in May, the City Council elects from its members a Vice Mayor.  The Vice Mayor is traditionally selected for two one-year terms.  During the Mayor's absence or disability, the Vice Mayor exercises the powers and performs the duties of the Mayor.   If for any reason the Mayor fails to serve his or her full term of office, the Vice Mayor shall assume the duties of the Mayor for the unexpired term.
