Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I read what is in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?

Both the City's accessibility issues coordinator and the Central Library have copies, plus additional explanatory documents.

How do I get the ADA enforced at a restaurant, movie theater, day care center and other places of public accommodation?

No local government enforces the American with Disabilities Act.  Nationally, the Act is enforced by the federal courts and the U.S. Department of Justice.

California is unique in that the state's civil rights law - the Unruh Act - was amended in 1998 to "reference" the ADA, and therefore the state court system can be used to enforce ADA requirements in California.  Additional state legislation in 1998 made it easier to take violations of the ADA to Small Claims Court.  Individual and community efforts to encourage businesses to comply with the ADA are often successful.

How do I inform the City of a street intersection that needs curb ramps?

Write, call or e-mail City Hall, and provide the street intersection and how to contact you.

At the Rose Parade, how do I get to sit in an accessible viewing area?

A limited number of wheelchair accessible seats are available in grandstands and can be purchased through the grandstand concessionaire.  At street level, the City coordinates three accessible viewing areas, including a section with sign language interpretation and a section with audio description.  While City coordinated areas are free of charge, it is necessary to reserve space by calling 626-744-ROSE between October 1 and December 1.
