The after school recreation playground program is governed by the City of Pasadena and administered through the Human Services and Recreation Department. The Pasadena Unified School District has a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Pasadena in terms of facility usage schools. A minimal fee is charged for youth sports and cheerleading. Each school allows indoor usage in case of inclement weather.
The program begins the second week of September and ends the last day of school year.
The program is held at 17 school playgrounds and 1 neighborhood Satellite Park. A management Recreation Supervisor directly supervises the overall program. Each site has a Site Coordinator who is directly responsible for the supervision of a specific site and Recreation Leaders who provide structured activities and general supervision.
The required activities offered at each site are:
homework time before playtime, nature, drama, arts & crafts, story telling, youth sports, cheerleading and high & low organized games.
The program operates 15 hours a week following school, Monday through Friday for 40 weeks.
Seasonal youth sports competitions are held on Saturdays.
The after school program's peak attendance numbers over 1800 youths per day at all 16 sites.
The playground program is not a licensed child-care program and children freely choose between the activities of their choice. The children sign themselves in and out each day.
