SELECTION CRITERIA
Pasadena
Neighbor Leadership Institute(PNLI) is a free eight-week, interactive
training program designed to empower
emerging, locally based leaders.
Initiated by Mayor Bill Bogaard
to strengthen the Pasadena community, the program was created in partnership
with the Flintridge Foundation and the Pasadena Foundation and
is administered by the City
of Pasadena's Neighborhood Connections office.
-
To
continue the development of leaders from the city’s diverse
neighborhoods who are committed to effective action on local issues.
-
To
increase the participants' capacity to improve the quality of life in
their neighborhoods and
the city through team-oriented problem
solving.
-
To
link participants with community resources, local institutions,
government and social service agencies so that successful, creative
solutions can be implemented.
-
To
link participants to representatives from other neighborhoods so that
information sharing and support systems are developed between
neighborhood groups.
HOW
The workshops are primarily
interactive and experiential to develop both personal and interpersonal
skills. The training may include informational interviews, field
assignments, group exercises and short presentations. Participants will
learn specific skills such as project planning and implementation, public
speaking, how to run effective meetings, cross-cultural relations, and
recruiting volunteers. A final team project will allow participants to practice what
they have learned and make a positive contribution to the city and its
neighborhoods.
WHEN
The Institute consists of eight
workshops and a graduation celebration. Workshops are conducted on
Tuesdays, September 16, 23,
30, October
7, 14, 21,
28 and November
4
from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Graduation will be on November
18 at the Rose
Bowl Press Box (tentative location). A detailed workshop schedule will be provided upon
selection. Supper will be provided at all sessions.
Attendance is extremely important
for the success of the program and is mandatory, not optional.
The sessions will be scheduled
at various locations throughout Pasadena
to highlight and emphasize the subject matter for that week’s
discussion.
SELECTION
CRITERIA
Twenty participants, including
youth in their senior year of high school, who are
committed to improving the quality of their neighborhoods
will be selected.
Consideration will be given to those applicants who participate in
community service and civic activities,
demonstrate a commitment to action on local issues, and are interested in
developing teamwork and collaborative skills to empower
themselves and their neighbors.
