Allendale Branch and Neighborhood History The Allendale branch building, created as an isolation hospital, was totally remodeled and opened for library business in 1951. The adobe ranch-style building features a fireplace, wide windows with one door opening onto a fenced patio and the other to a picnic park area with playground. The small branch lacks a separate meeting room. By contract, Allendale serves as the school library for Allendale Elementary School next door, and serves both students and teachers at the adjacent Blair High School. The Pasadena Freeway feeds directly into the Allendale neighborhood. The community can be characterized as "economically stable" with mostly upper middle class households. The branch neighborhood looks like this: to the east, large estates and winding roads; to the west, industrial areas with commercial properties extending to Fair Oaks; to the immediate south, increasingly spacious homes, San Marino; to the north, apartments, condominiums, the Huntington Memorial Hospital, doctors suites, and medical office buildings. Neighborhood Characteristics and Population Source: 2000 Census. Allendale's service area is represented by tracts 4639,4640. The population of these two census tracts includes 8,760 people, of whom 16% are age 17 and under. Political Districts (based on library's address, service area may cross district boundaries)
