Storytimes
Every Pasadena Public Library site hosts at least one storytime on a regular basis for
children under the age of five. Children and their parents attending these
storytimes will enjoy being read to, joining in on fingerplays, songs and watching a short
literature-based film or video. Very often, there is a short craft at the end of the
storytime. These programs are listed in the Community
Information Database on any library terminal, on the Library's Kids Page on the Internet and in the
Storytime brochure which is available at all sites.
Storytimes for
elementary school-age children are also available at most sites. These special
programs are held after-school and on weekends and are listed on each site's monthly
schedule of events.
Special Programs
Storytellers, magicians, puppet shows, guest speakers,
and dancers appear at all sites throughout the year to spark interest and encourage the
love of reading. These programs are also listed on each site's monthly schedule of
events, in the Community Information Database, on the Library's Kids Page on the Internet and in local
newspapers.
Summer Reading Club
Each summer, children of all ages are encouraged to
read over the summer through an incentive program. Summer Reading Club begins the day
after the Pasadena Unified School year ends and continues until mid-August. Each
library location hosts special programs during the summer in conjunction with Summer
Reading Club. Information about this program can be found on the Library's Kids Page on the Internet and in special
flyers sent home with public and private school students.
Children's Book Week
This is a national celebration that
occurs the third week in November. Special activities and programs are held to
celebrate reading. Overdue fines on children's cards are forgiven and children can also
get a lost library card replaced free of charge.
KidsCat
These special on-line card catalogs have been
developed specifically for children. Children are afforded a number of ways to find
juvenile library materials. They can:
1. type in words or,
using a mouse, point and click on the letters of the words of their search
2. pick from a list of
subjects
3. pick from a list of
books on a selected topic or
4. use a mouse to point
and click on visual images helping to narrow their search.
Learning Enrichment Centers
These are multi-media workstations with CD-ROM
encyclopedias and educational software that promote reading language, math, social studies
and computer skills. A child may sign up to use them for thirty minute
intervals.
Reader's Advisory
Library staff can offer suggestions on good books
to read that are age and reading level appropriate.
Answers to Questions
Library staff will
help children and adults find materials that will answer questions, complete assignments
or satisfy a curiosity.
Resources Available
Children have full access to the entire
collection both print and non-print. They may check out books, magazines (only children's
magazines are available for check out at the Central Library), CD's, cassettes,
cassette/book kits and books on tape. All these materials are free of charge. There
is a minimal charge for most videos. Parents of preschoolers may check out materials
from the Toy Lending Library before and after pre-school storytimes. It is the
parent's/guardian's right and responsibility to monitor their children's choices in
materials.
Access to the Internet
Internet terminals are available at all Pasadena Public
Library sites. The Library has created a Home Page and Library's Kids Page to help access information and
subjects of interest on the Internet. The library's Internet Policy
for Children details the rights and responsibilities of use and should be read before
a patron uses any Internet terminal. Any person, regardless of age, can use the Internet
terminals through a simple sign-up procedure. It is the parent's/guardian's right
and responsibility to monitor their children's use of the Internet.
Class Visits
Tours, reading enrichment programs, skills
lessons and material checkout times are provided to area school classes through scheduled
appointments, both at the library and at the school site. Students fourth grade and above
