Learn the Board Game Go

The latest craze from Japan isn’t an expensive, highly technical video game. It is a 4,000 year old board game called Go. Go is the game of surrounding and capturing territory, and is central to the popular anime and manga Hikaru no Go.
Go is played in Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan, and is far more popular than chess is in the United States. Players in Go tournaments compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money, with newspapers and cable stations covering these tournaments.
Learning the rules of Go is simple and can be taught in a few minutes, yet it can take a lifetime to master the game.

The Pasadena Public Library hosts a weekly Go Club for teens, every Saturday, from 2 pm – 4 pm in Teen Central. Competitors are instructed by Pasadena Yu-Go Go Club players. New players will receive a free game board and introductory booklet. Teens who continue to play at the Library on a regular basis are eligible to receive their very own Go magnetic board.
The Pasadena Public Library is located at 285 E. Walnut St., Pasadena, CA. For more information, please call (626) 744-4766.

“EASTER ISLAND” IS 2008 ONE CITY, ONE STORY SELECTION

The book selection for Pasadena’s sixth One City, One Story community reading celebration is Jennifer Vanderbes’s debut novel “Easter Island.”

Named a Best Book of 2003 by the Washington Post and Christian Science Monitor, the novel tells of adventure, betrayal and scientific discovery as the stories unfold of two women whose lives converge on Easter Island several decades apart: Elsa Pendleton, the young wife of a renowned British anthropologist who accompanies her husband and developmentally disabled sister to the island at the brink of World War I; and Dr. Greer Farraday, a botanist who arrives on the island to research ancient pollens in the early 1970s following the death of her husband. Easter Island’s history, culture, ecology and mysterious statues are embodied in the pages of the book.

Vanderbes was a Truman Capote Fellow at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she earned a master’s in fine arts degree. She later was awarded a McCreight Fiction Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin and the Creative Writing Fellowship at Colgate University. She was a 2006 Guggenheim Fellow and was recently named a 2007-2008 Cullman Fellow at New York Public Library.

• April 2 - Kon-Tiki (1950)
In 1947, Norwegian biologist and his five crew members embarked on a daring voyage from Peru to Tahiti prove Heyerdahl's theory that South Americans aboard balsa-wood rafts settled the South Seas Islands. Filmed en route with 16-millimeter camera equipment, this Academy Award-winning documentary follows Kon-Tiki, a raft made with no nails or rivets, on the journey the scientific community considered foolish and suicidal.

• April 16 - Globe Trekker: Chile and Easter Island (2004)
Travel guide Ian Wright leads viewers through this fascinating Chilean adventure featuring tours of the Atacama Desert, Santiago (the country's capital), the rugged Andes Mountains, Torres del Paine National Park's glaciers and mysterious Easter Island. Along the way, Wright visits with the Mapuche Indian tribe, learns to herd llamas, surveys the world's highest geyser field and stargazes through the southern hemisphere's largest telescope

• April 23 - South Pacific (1958)
In this Oscar-winning Rodgers and Hammerstein musical set in a tropical paradise, two couples from cultures a world apart grapple with love at a time of war. Sparks fly when Nellie (Mitzi Gaynor), a naive Navy nurse stationed in the South Seas, meets the worldly Emile, a French plantation owner (Rossano Brazzi). Meanwhile, in a then-daring depiction of interracial relationships, a young American officer falls for a beautiful island native.

• April 30 - Florilegium: The Flowering of the Pacific (1984)
This outstanding documentary follows the work of botanist Joseph Banks, who accompanied explorer Captain James Cook on his first trip around the globe. Banks, with botanist Carl Daniel Solander, collected more than 700 species of previously unknown plants. Artist Sydney Parkinson recorded many for posterity, but the complete set of engravings was not completed until 200 years later.

What had gone wrong with a civilization that had lived in peace for nearly a thousand years? In this program, Claudio Cristino, the island’s resident archaeologist; William Liller, of the Easter Island Foundation; Patricia Vargas Casanova, of the Easter Island Studies Institute at the University of Chile; and others offer their views on moai, rongorongo tablets, the Birdman Cult, and the devastating effects of overpopulation, to provide a captivating glimpse of a complex culture driven to the brink of extinction. Search California—Discover the World @ the Pasadena Public Library

Now you can search the collections of libraries throughout California, and the world from the convenience of the Pasadena Public Library's catalog and website.
From the Library’s website (www.pasadenapubliclibrary.net) click on the “library catalog” button. Look for the link that says “search other libraries” and enter the vast resources of the new California Libraries Catalog (CAlcat). “This is a giant step forward for libraries and information seekers,” says Beth Walker, Principal Librarian at Pasadena Public Library.

Create a search that meets your specific needs: by type of library (academic, public, etc.), by format (books, musical scores, visual materials, computer files, magazines and newspapers, maps, etc.) or simply by title or author to locate an item. If you live or work in Pasadena, request the title through our Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL), just an easy click away.

Use CAlcat to view collections from libraries all over the world through its connection to the WorldCat Catalog, a global database listing more than a billion items—everything from stone tablets to sheet music to MP3s, DVDs, newspapers, government documents and more! WorldCat includes items held by libraries throughout the United States and more than 80 countries.

“Access to these catalogs will be a boon for students, teachers, researchers, business people and others,” said Jan Sanders, Pasadena Public Library Director. “If you have a special interest such as history, genealogy or gardening, or a special need, such as Braille, or large print, you’re going to want to use this exciting resource.”
CAlcat was developed with a federal Library Services and Technology Act grant administered by the State Library of California. WorldCat is a service of OCLC, a worldwide library cooperative.

If you are searching the Pasadena Public Library's catalog, look for the "search other libraries" link and try it today!
