Meet Max Max was a frequent visitor to the
Hastings Branch Library
from the early 1980s to 1996.

This is his story as told by Donna Watkins, former Branch Librarian.

Max hiding out!

Max usually stayed home with his best friend Leah Thompson, but quite frequently he would take a little walk and come visit the Hastings Branch Library in Pasadena.

It was okay when he would hang around outside the library, but when he began to hang around inside the library we got worried.  We couldn't have a cat inside the library, could we?  So, we put him out.  And we told him, "Max, don't come back."  We thought that was the end of it, but you know what happened?

Max came back!

Max, it's time to leave!

He hid in the grass, crept up to the door, and waited very still until someone opened the door.  And then he just sneaked in!  Once Max got in the library, he looked around and explored.  He even made some new friends.  The children didn't mind so much, but we were worried.  So, we put him out.  And we told him, "Max, don't come back."  We thought that was the end of it, but you know what happened?

Max came back!

Max reads his favorite book As soon as someone opened the door, he'd just sneak in!  This time he came right up to the desk as if he as going to check out a book!  We were amazed!  We never knew when he was going to turn up next.   He even came to storytime.  He was turning up in the craziest places.  We found him up high on top of our bookcases, and we found him in the toybox.  But we couldn't have a cat inside the library, could we?  So, we put him out.  And we told him, "Max, don't come back."  We thought that was the end of it, but you know what happened?

Max came back!

Max gets his library card We thought we had seen it all.  But when we saw Max learning to use the computer to look up a book, and actually reading, we knew we had a very special cat on our hands, a library cat.  There was only one thing to do, and we did it.  We gave Max an application to fill out. And we gave him his own library card.  And he even signed up for the Summer Reading Club.  Max loved coming to the library and everyone looked forward to his visits, but one day Max left the library and you know what?

Max didn't come back!

Computer Cat!

We began to miss him and we went looking for him. We looked everywhere. Max was nowhere to be found.  So we got down to some serious detective work. We followed every clue. We checked the whole neighborhood.   Then we had a breakthrough! The mailman told us that Max and his family had moved.   They now lived in the country.

So we went to visit Max.  We found Max's new home up near the mountains. Now he has lots of grass and flowers, and he is very happy in his new home.  We told Max that the kids really missed him at the library.  Then he had a great idea! Max said, "Let's put my picture on the Library Kids Page so that they can still see me at the library!"

And so we did.
