Are you involved in your neighborhood or community but need new tools and skills to become more effective? Are you interested in becoming involved but don't know where to start?
WHAT Pasadena Neighbor Leadership Institute(PNLI) is a free eight-week, interactive training program designed to empower emerging, locally based leaders. WHO Initiated by Mayor Bill Bogaard to strengthen the Pasadena community, the program was created in partnership with the Flintridge Foundation and the Pasadena Foundation and is administered by the City of Pasadena's Neighborhood Connections office. WHY- To continue the development of leaders from the city’s diverse neighborhoods who are committed to effective action on local issues. - To increase the participants' capacity to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods and the city through team-oriented problem solving. - To link participants with community resources, local institutions, government and social service agencies so that successful, creative solutions can be implemented. - To link participants to representatives from other neighborhoods so that information sharing and support systems are developed between neighborhood groups. WHEN The Institute consists of eight workshops and a graduation celebration. Workshops are conducted on Tuesdays, September 13, 20, 27, October 4, 11, 18, 25,and November 1. A graduation preparation meeting will be held on November 8 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Graduation will be on November 15 at the Rose Bowl Press Box (tentative location). A detailed workshop schedule will be provided upon selection. Supper will be provided at all sessions. Attendance is extremely important for the success of the program and is mandatory, not optional. WHERE The sessions will be scheduled at various locations throughout Pasadena to highlight and emphasize the subject matter for that week’s discussion. SELECTION CRITERIA Twenty participants, including youth in their senior year of high school, who are committed to improving the quality of their neighborhoods will be selected. Consideration will be given to those applicants who participate in community service and civic activities, demonstrate a commitment to action on local issues, and are interested in developing teamwork and collaborative skills to empower themselves and their neighbors.
