Unit

Goals

Locate and recover Identify suspects all possible Preserve and document the scene physical evidence Testify to the scientific facts of the case: Fingerprints, Photographs, and Chalk Lines.

History

  • Prior to 1988, all crime scene evidence duties were performed by Agents (now called Corporals).

  • 1988, the first Police Assistants (now called CSO’s) were trained in crime scene processing. Agents/Investigators continued same duties.

  • 1990, Police Assistant’s were given total evidence duties including all but the most major scenes.

  • 1992, the Forensic Services Unit is formed for crime scene processing on all major cases (no exceptions). Routine scenes still handled by P.A.’s.

  • 1993, the Forensic Services Unit is expanded to 8 and ALL physical evidence at ALL crime scenes becomes the total responsibility of the Unit.
     

  • 1993 – Present, the Unit engages in ongoing training and crime scene work accumulating around 75 years of collective crime scene experience.
