Goals

The goal of the Forensic Service Unit is to use the application of a broad spectrum of science and technology to investigate and establish facts in a criminal court of law. In addition the unit is responsible for the preserving and documenting the scene, locating and recovering evidence, conducting forensic examinations and testifying in court.

History of the Unit

  • Prior to 1988, all crime scene evidence duties were performed by Agents (now called Corporals).

  • 1988, the first Police Assistants (now called CSO’s) were trained in crime scene processing. Agents/Investigators continued same duties.

  • 1990, Police Assistant’s were given total evidence duties including all but the most major scenes.

  • 1992, the Forensic Services Unit is formed for crime scene processing on all major cases (no exceptions). Routine scenes still handled by P.A.’s.

  • 1993, the Forensic Services Unit is expanded to 8 and ALL physical evidence at ALL crime scenes becomes the total responsibility of the Unit.

  • 1993 – Present, the Unit engages in ongoing training and crime scene work accumulating around 75 years of collective crime scene experience.
