Get a Free Firearm Safety Kit

THE LOADED GUN IN YOUR HOUSE could be deadly to your child or his friends.

To prevent senseless tragedies, the Pasadena Police Department has teamed up
with Project ChildSafe to provide free firearm safety kits to Pasadena residents while supplies last. You can pick yours up at the Community Services Desk at police headquarters, 207 N. Garfield Ave., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The free kits include clear instructions on gun safety, advising you to keep your gun stored in a secure spot, unloaded and separate from any ammunition. You'll also receive a free cable-style gun lock that fits most handguns, rifles and shotguns. While you're there, pick up free brochures including "Dealing with Gun Violence" and "Turn Off the Violence."

Research shows that most families with children have a gun and that these home
guns were used during most accidents, suicides and many homicides. The Police Department has made protecting children its number one goal. Stop by and do
your part!

For more information call 744-4551.

Get Rid of Old Paint, Computers and More

IT'S NOT TOO LATE for a little spring cleaning. Get your garage, cupboards and closets back in shape with a free household hazardous waste and e-waste roundup Saturday, June 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Parking Lot K at the Rose Bowl.

Sponsored by the county in cooperation with Pasadena and neighboring cities, the event gives you a safe, easy and legal way to get rid of hazardous products that cannot be accepted by the city's trash haulers. All you need to do is put your old household chemicals or e-waste in boxes, then drive through the service area where crew members will help you unload.

Household hazardous waste is any product with the words toxic, poison, corrosive, flammable, combustible or irritant on the label. This includes motor oil, paint, turpentine, acid or lye-based cleaners, batteries, pesticides and herbicides, old pharmaceuticals and mercury thermometers. Be sure to leave your discards in their original containers and don't mix any products together.

Electronic waste (e-waste) includes computers, monitors, televisions, VCRs, stereos, fax machines, copiers, computer keyboards and cell phones.

Keep in mind that no appliances, explosive or radioactive material, tires or waste from business will be accepted.

If you can't make it to the roundup or if you have questions, visit www.lacsd.org or call (888) CLEAN-LA.

Get Rid of Bulky Trash, Too!

THE COUNTY WILL TAKE YOUR HAZARDOUS WASTE, but who will take your old sofa? If you can't donate it to charity, call the city's Public Works Department at
744-4087 to schedule a bulky item pick-up. Then simply put your large, bulky items by the curb no later than 7 a.m. on the day of your appointment. (Please don't set it out more than 24 hours in advance.)

If you receive city trash service, you're allowed up to one free pick-up every year to get rid of old appliances, carpet, mattresses, furniture and more. Additional pickups are available, with fees ranging from $35 to $125, depending on the size and type of the load. You can also rent a bin for $89 for a week, which includes delivery and pick-up.

Remember that this is far cheaper than the city's $500 fine for dumping bulky trash on public property. (To report illegal dumping, call 744-4633.)

Honoring Pasadena's Best

CELEBRATE LOCAL HEROES at the Pasadena Police Department's 34th Police and Citizens Awards Luncheon on Thursday, May 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Ritz Carlton-Huntington Hotel, 1401 S. Oak Knoll Ave.

The popular annual event honors residents and police employees who have shown outstanding bravery, commitment to service and dedication to our community. Each recipient is chosen for a single heroic deed or for ongoing efforts. This year's master of ceremonies is NBC TV news anchor Beverly White.

For your $40 ticket or more information, call 744-4551.
