YOU CAN HELP PASADENA WATER AND POWER
make history by sending a message to the future in a
100-year time capsule that will be sealed in May. The Letters to the Future
contest is part of PWP’s 2006 Centennial celebration, marking 100 years of
service to the community. A slate of events is planned to thank city residents
for their continuing support for PWP through the years.
In 1906, Pasadena residents formed PWP to provide lower-cost electricity to this
vibrant and rapidly growing community. Over the course of 100 years, PWP
employees have built and maintained the city’s water and electricity
infrastructure and provided the utility services that have helped create
Pasadena’s distinctive lifestyle and character.
Through March 31, Pasadena residents can submit a one-page letter, answering the
question: What do I want Pasadenans in the year 2106 to know about the Pasadena
of today?
Your entry may include descriptions of your personal hometown experiences or
comments about today’s lifestyle. Up to 25 winning letters will be selected
based on subject appropriateness and originality. Contest winners will be
invited to place their letters into the time capsule personally during a May 13
community ceremony at Paseo Colorado and will each receive four tickets to this
year’s Fourth of July fireworks spectacular at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Winning
letters will be sealed into the time capsule, which will be opened in May 2106
during PWP’s bicentennial celebration.
Your Letters to the Future entry may be computer-generated or handwritten and
should be no longer than one standard-size page (8 ½ x 11”). Please include your
name, address and telephone number on your entry and mail it by March 31 to:

THANKS TO NEW SOLAR PANELS installed by
Pasadena Water and Power, Pasadena High School students are using energy from
the sun to power tomorrow’s bright ideas. The 10-kilowatt photovoltaic system
was completed in September and has been providing PHS with clean,
environmentally friendly electricity ever since.
The panels are
also connected to a computer program that compiles system data that can be
incorporated into the school’s science and math curriculum. The program collects
data such as kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity produced each day, the number
of kWh produced since the solar panels were installed and much more. According
to the data collected, if the system continues to operate at the same level it
has since installation, it will produce more than 20,000 kWh in the next year,
prevent more than 11,000 pounds of air pollution and save nearly $10,000 in
electricity costs.
PWP has also assisted with solar panel installations at other locations citywide
including Lamanda Park Branch Library, Armory Center for the Arts and the City
Yards. Future installations are planned at Eaton Canyon Nature Center and the
Lake Avenue Metro Gold Line Station.
If you’d like to cut your power bills and install solar panels at home, you can
receive
a PWP rebate of up to $10,000. For more information, call PWP’s AnswerLine at
