Summer Fun Heats Up

Summer in Pasadena is a great time of year to play, explore and learn new things. Dozens of fun camps, classes and activities are offered for people of all abilities, from little ones to teens and young adults to seniors.

Whether you’d like to play games with a friend, try a new sport, go on an excursion, dabble in the arts or learn about nature and conservation, there’s a summer program just for you!

swimThe spring and summer recreation catalog, published by the Human Services and Recreation Department, is available at most city facilities including community centers and libraries. Just a few of the offerings in the catalog include adaptive recreation, aerobics, aquatics, archery, arts and crafts, basketball, computers, dance, day camps, dog obedience, drill team, flag football, fly casting, gymnastics, horsemanship, in-line skating, soccermartial arts, nutrition, sewing, sleepover camps, soccer, softball, tennis
and track.

You can also call 744-6940 for a copy of the catalog or visit www.cityofpasadena.net/humanservices (click on Recreation Programs).

City Hall Retrofit Update

chWith just over a year to go before project completion, about 200 workers are ensuring that the retrofit and restoration of Pasadena City Hall are completed on time and on budget.

Although significant work has been in progress since July 2004, the most symbolic outward sign of the project -
the scaffolding around the main tower -
has been erected gradually and tells passersby that work is ongoing.

The primary elements of the project include seismic strengthening; mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire suppression systems; technology upgrades; elevator upgrades; ADA upgrades; restoration of interior spaces; exterior building restoration; and landscape restoration.

Historic office areas have been maintained and protected and protection measures are in place to safeguard all trees on the project site.

All work is being done under the watchful eye of certified arborists and experts in historic preservation and structural engineering.

This City Hall Retrofit Oversight Committee provides in-depth technical expertise to the City Council and the community on various project elements including project planning, scope, construction deadlines, budget, design and historic preservation issues, landscape design and tree preservation practices. The committee meets the second Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. and all meetings are open to the public.

hooray

Surrounded by celebrity look-alikes, Melanie Lynn was ready for her close-up at “Hooray for Hollywood,” a salute to the Oscars that was co-sponsored by AbilityFirst and the Adaptive Recreation Section of the Human Services and Recreation Department. Teens and adults with disabilities arrived in limousines, went along a red carpet and enjoyed nightclub entertainment while their families and friends played the roles of paparazzi and fans. The Adaptive Recreation Section provides ongoing arts and recreation activities for disabled children, teens and adults at Victory Park Center. For more information email jscott@cityofpasadena.net or call 744-7257.
