Pasadena is bigger than ever!
You'll find a record number of arts and cultural offerings completely free of
charge Friday, March 9, from
6 to 10 p.m. More than 20 Pasadena institutions and organizations will provide a
rich sampling of art, artifacts, dance and music during this 17th semi-annual
celebration.
Of special note this time are an interactive installation by JPL's visual
strategist, the 100th birthday celebration of the late Norton Simon and two
bands playing at Pasadena Jazz Institute's new digs.
Curb-to-curb shuttle service will be offered to and from Armory Center for the
Arts, Armory Northwest, Art Center College of Design's Williamson Gallery,
Boston Court Performing Arts Complex, Metro Gallery, Norton Simon Museum of Art,
One Colorado, Pacific Asia Museum, Pasadena Central Library, Pasadena City
College, Pasadena Conservatory of Music, Pasadena Jazz Institute, Pasadena
Museum of California Art, Pasadena Museum of History and Pasadena Symphony. The
Pasadena Society of Artists, Lineage Dance and Crown City Chamber Players will
also participate, teaming up with larger institutions.
Sponsored by the Arts & Culture Commission, ArtNight Pasadena is an ongoing
partnership among the community's cultural institutions and the Cultural Affairs
Division of the Planning and Development Department.

Ridership is up 20 percent on the Pasadena ARTS bus system! More and more people
are leaving their cars behind
and discovering the ease and convenience of these clean- running air-conditioned
buses.
The fare is just 50’ to nearly anywhere you want to go in Pasadena seven days a
week (25’ for kids, seniors and riders with disabilities).
In addition to serving major corridors including Lake Avenue, Colorado
Boulevard, Fair Oaks Avenue and Washington Boulevard, Pasadena ARTS bus routes
are convenient to most residential neighborhoods throughout the community. The
buses also connect to every Metro Gold Line station and many schools in
Pasadena, with plenty of stops in Old Pasadena, South Lake and the Playhouse
District.
Imagine the possibilities! Look for schedules for all seven routes aboard
Pasadena ARTS buses, at Pasadena public libraries and at
www.cityofpasadena.net/trans/transit.
Please call 744-4055 for more information.
Summer
is peak season for wildfires
and it's not too early to protect our hillsides. Pasadena Fire Department is
conducting brush clearance inspections through the end of June.
If you live in a high-hazard area, watch for a brochure that outlines state laws
and regulations that will help keep you and your neighbors safe. In the
meantime, follow these PFD tips:
If you're
tempted to clear out native chaparral, please don't! Chaparral helps stabilize
slopes and control
erosion. Instead, keep grass and weeds mowed, and use
groundcovers with high
moisture content that are less than 18 inches tall.
Keep
other shrubs and trees well trimmed and make sure they're about 18 inches
apart. Good choices
with high moisture content include citrus, oak and oleander.
Clean
leaves, needles and twigs from your roof gutters.
Soak
trees and shrubs monthly to maintain leaf moisture. Add at least three inches
of mulch over planted
areas to prevent weeds.
Keep your
property free of debris that can catch fire, including dried vegetation,
cuttings and wood.
If youre
planning a large-scale landscaping project, check with Pasadena Fire
Department about
current regulations.
For more tips, call 744-7178.
Everybody deserves a little peace and quiet.
The Pasadena Municipal Code restricts the hours allowed for construction for
everyone from big developers to homeowners.
Construction is allowed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but it's prohibited on Sundays and holidays. (The rules
don't apply to do-it-yourselfers doing minor projects with little or no
assistance.)
Allowable construction hours are listed on all construction permit forms and are
posted at all construction sites where structural work is being done. City code
compliance officers enforce the laws whenever they're aware of violations. To
make a complaint, call 744-6831 during regular business hours or 744-4501 on
weekends and holidays.
For the Pasadena Municipal Code Chapter 9.36.100, which covers construction
noise, visit
www.cityofpasadena.net/cityclerk.
The Human Services and Recreation Department offers activities
for Pasadena residents of all ages this summer! Employment applications are
being accepted for day camp directors, class instructors, recreation leaders,
therapeutic recreation instructors, lifeguards, pool managers and aquatics
supervisors. If you think you qualify, visit
City of Pasadena Current Job Openings
or come to the
Human Resources Department at 117 E. Colorado Blvd., first floor.
Teens ages 13 to 15 can fill their summer days with field trips, music, dance,
art, sports and fitness during teen camp at Robinson Park. You'll build new
friendships, improve your leadership skills and learn more about your hometown.
Call 744-6525 or 744-7330 to sign up.
Children ages 5 to 12 will have a blast at fee-based summer day camps offered at
Allendale, Robinson, Victory and Villa parks, which are now enrolling (financial
assistance is available). Call 744-6525 for details. Villa Park also offers a
sports and soccer camp. Free summer day camps will be offered at Jefferson, La
Pintoresca and Washington parks.
For more information visit
www.cityofpasadena.net/humanservices and click on Recreation Programs.
More detailed, specific information about summer recreation programs will be
included in the May/June edition of Pasadena In Focus.
Meet
Bo Caldwell, author
of The Distant Land of My Father, Pasadena's One City, One Story book
selection, Friday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Forum Room at All Saints
Church, 132 N. Euclid Ave.
Caldwell's riveting first novel tells the story of a young girl, Anna, who lives
a wealthy lifestyle with her parents in pre-World War II Shanghai. When Japan
occupies Shanghai, she and her mother flee to California but her father stays
behind, believing his connections and a little bit of luck will keep him safe.
Through Anna's memories and her father's journals, we learn of his fall from
charismatic millionaire to tortured prisoner in a story of betrayal and
reconciliation that spans two continents.
The Distant Land of My Father is available at Pasadena Central Library, all
branch libraries and local bookstores.
Book discussion groups are forming! Be sure to participate as part of our annual
community reading project; attend the discussion group that is most convenient
for you.
