Get Up & Moving With Pasadena’s Mayor
Crystal blue skies, the snow-topped San Gabriels, the first flowers of spring: What better way to celebrate the Earth than to get up and moving? Pasadena’s mayor invites everyone to get some fresh air and exercise with a brisk walk around the Rose Bowl Stadium the first Wednesday of every month at 7:45 a.m. Upcoming special guest walkers include Gale Anne Hurd, producer of the “Terminator” movies and the upcoming film “The Incredible Hulk,” on April 2; and Chris Vicino, Pasadena police chief, on May 7. A team effort of the city, Pasadena Unified School District, local businesses and non-profit groups, Up & Moving Pasadena is aimed at getting us out of our cars and improving fitness citywide. Find walking tips, start a walking group and track your progress by calling 831-2980 or visiting www.upandmoving.org. Every level of ability will be accommodated. You can do it!
Enjoy an Hour in the Dark
During that hour, we’ll take time to reflect on our energy use and its impact on the environment. We’re also encouraged to go outside, meet our neighbors and explore city landmarks while enjoying a car-free evening. (If you leave your property, be sure to turn on an LED flashlight or other no- or low-energy lighting device in your home for security purposes.) The city of Pasadena will host several events from 7 to 9 p.m. that most residents can walk to in less than 20 minutes. At City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave., the dome and façade lights will be turned off at 8 p.m. for storytelling and acoustic music. Several branch libraries will stay open late for special events “in the dark”: You can walk to the Allendale branch, 1130 S. Marengo Ave., for a sing-along; the Hastings branch, 3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd., for storytelling; or the San Rafael branch, 1240 Nithsdale Rd., for stargazing on its terrace. At each location, city departments will provide free energy-saving products (including compact fluorescent lightbulbs), environmental resources, information about Pasadena’s Green City Action Plan and more. That same evening, local businesses and organizations will also host their own events, from “green” open houses to children’s storytimes to group walks.
