  • What is WIC?


    Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a federally –funded health and nutrition program for women, infants, and children. WIC helps families by providing checks for buying healthy supplemental foods from WIC-authorized vendors.  Knowledgeable staff provide nutrition education and help finding healthcare and other community services.

    WIC serves over 5,200 clients in the greater Pasadena area. 

  • Who can WIC help?

    Women and their children who need better nutrition and who are:

    • Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or just had a baby
    • Children under 5 years old (including foster children)
    • Grandparents who have custody of children under 5 years old
    • Families with a low to medium income. Working families may qualify.

    What can you get at WIC?

    • Special checks to buy healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, soymilk, formula, juice, eggs, cheese, whole-grain breads and cereals and tortillas, brown rice, dry beans and peas, and peanut butter
    • Information about nutrition and health to help you and your family eat well and be healthy
    • Support and information about breastfeeding your baby through our Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program 
    • Help in finding health care and other community services
    • Culturally relevant care.  Staff are multi-lingual and can speak Spanish, Tagolog, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese.  Translation is available in other languages.

    Who Is qualified?

    Generally, WIC is available to:

    • Low income pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women
    • Low income parents or caregivers (including grandparents) who are the sole provider of children under age five and who are at nutritional risk.
    • Low income is at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level. (See Income Guideline)

    * This online tool is only a preliminary assessment – only Local WIC Agency staff can determine if you qualify for WIC services.

    How do you apply for WIC services?

    At your appointment, WIC staff will check to see if you and your family qualify.

  • Authorized Foods & Shopping Guide

    The WIC Authorized Food List Shopping Guide (WAFL/SG) is the official document that outlines the foods authorized in the California WIC Program. The WAFL/SG will be reviewed and revised by the California WIC Program as needed on an annual basis.  WIC is also accepted at the Pasadena Certified Farmer's Markets at Villa Parke (Tues. 8:30 am-12:30 pm), Shopper's Lane (see link below for hours) and Victory Park (Sat. 8:30 am-12:30 pm).
