The Traffic Engineering Division is
responsible for daily traffic operations in the City. The
division conducts traffic investigations in response to citizen requests
for various traffic control devices such as stop signs, striping
changes, parking restrictions, new traffic signals and modifications to signal
timing.
In addition, the division handles other
traffic related support functions such as, Engineering and Traffic Surveys
(determining appropriate speed limits), school zone signing and pavement
markings, valet parking permits, traffic control requirements as part of
special events, construction permits, filming permits, high accident
location investigations, along with the management of traffic engineering
related capital improvement projects.
The division also operates a state-of-the-art Traffic Management Center
(TMC) where it manages 300 traffic signals, 10 traffic surveillance
closed circuit television cameras and 9 variable message signs within
the City. The TMC is equipped with an extensive communications
infrastructure composed of twisted pair copper for the computerized
traffic signal network and fiber optics for the closed circuit
television network. This intricate communication infrastructure allows
the TMC to maintain continuous communication with these field devices;
thus traffic operations and video surveillance operations are executed
in real time mode. The TMC also provides key traffic management support
to the Police Department’s Special Event Operations personnel during
major events held at the Rose Bowl.
