In
April 2001, Ms. Currie was appointed General Manager of Pasadena Water and
Power (PWP). In this capacity, she is responsible for providing
electricity to the city of Pasadena and water to residents of the city and
portions of Altadena. Prior to this appointment, her 30-year career with
the city of Los Angeles gave her exposure to a wealth of public policy
issues, including 15 years overseeing capital finance programs and the
issuance of tax-exempt debt. As
Chief Financial Officer for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power
(DWP) she managed the financial affairs of the $2.5 billion public power
and water utility, including DWP’s joint ventures and partnerships, such
as the Southern California, Public Power Authority and the Intermountain
Power Project in Utah. She led the development of financial strategies to
position DWP to compete in a deregulated electric industry. In addition,
she launched cost control initiatives, restructured debt, established debt
reduction funds for accelerating debt pay-off, amended city charter
provisions to increase financial flexibility, developed financial plans to
support major water infrastructure and water quality improvements, and
served as a trustee for the $2.6 billion water and power pension plan. Ms.
Currie also served in Los Angeles as Assistant City Administrative Officer
overseeing development of the annual operating budget, and long-range
financial planning and debt issuance for: 1) major capital needs such as
wastewater, street resurfacing and transportation projects; 2) expansion
of existing facilities such as the city’s central library and convention
center; and 3) new facilities such as branch libraries, and police and fire
stations. Prior to becoming Assistant City Administrative Officer, she
worked in the budget, employee relations and management audit divisions of
the City Administrative Office, and also as director of the Los Angeles
rent control program. Ms.
Currie is a member of the Government Finance Officers Association and the
National Forum of Black Public Administrators. Past professional
affiliations include the Large Public Power Council, the Municipal
Securities Rulemaking Board, and the California Debt Advisory Commission. She
is on the board of directors and treasurer of the Angeles Girl Scout
Council and a board member and vice-president for finance of the Good
Shepherd Center for Homeless Women. Ms.
Currie earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UCLA and a
Masters in Business Administration from UCLA’s Anderson School of
Business. She also completed the Program for Senior Executives in State
and Local Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at
Harvard University. |
