City Seeks Public Input on Colorado Street Bridge Suicide Prevention Barrier Design

PASADENA, Calif.—The public is invited to the first community meeting for the Colorado Street Bridge - Suicide Mitigation Enhancements Project. The meeting will take place Thursday, September 26, from 6:30-8 p.m. in Council Chambers at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave, Rm S249. The City and its Colorado Bridge Project Team will present the project scope and schedule for the design of a vertical barrier on the Colorado Street Bridge, and gather feedback and ideas from the public.

After evaluating a multitude of suicide deterrent measures and holding two community meetings to solicit public input on November 29, 2017 and February 20, 2018, the Colorado Street Bridge Task Force reached the conclusion that a vertical barrier with end treatments is the only means to effectively deter suicide attempts.

On April 23, 2018, City Council unanimously approved the suicide mitigation measures recommended by the task force and directed staff to further study the task force's recommendations and return to Council with a recommended project and appropriate environmental review.

In May of this year, City Council authorized the award of a professional services contract to Donald MacDonald Architects to complete the environmental and design phases of the project. The goal of the enhanced vertical barrier is to add a safety system to the Colorado Street Bridge without disrupting its structural and historical character.

The City's vision is for community members to be able to enjoy the Colorado Street Bridge and the Arroyo in a safe and beautiful environment now and into the future.
