Fire Chief Announces New Hazardous Materials Specialist

PASADENA, Calif.—Fire Chief Bertral Washington has announced the appointment of Kim Yu to the position of Hazardous Materials Specialist. Yu has been with Pasadena Fire Department for over 12 years, serving 11 years as Hazardous Materials Inspector and one year as acting Hazardous Materials Specialist. She will now oversee the Hazardous Materials Section, which is responsible for environmental and safety regulations of Pasadena businesses and properties, particularly those that store or utilize hazardous materials and have underground storage tanks. Yu also responds to hazardous materials incidents to assist with on-scene operations and regulates all professional pyrotechnics and special effects that occur in Pasadena.

“Kim embodies all of the essential qualities an executive seeks in a new manager. She has exceled in her education, training and experience, which has led to important achievements for our department and industry,” states Chief Washington. “I am eager to see how she helps propel our Fire Prevention services forward and how she develops as part of our management team.”

Prior to coming to the City, Yu worked at the Los Angeles County of Public Works as an Environmental Inspector. She also worked at UCLA managing the day-to-day operations of all instructional chemistry labs. Yu has her bachelor’s degree from UCLA in biochemistry with a minor in music history, and a master’s degree in public health from the USC Keck School of Medicine. She is fluent in Vietnamese and reads, writes and comprehends Korean.

Yu resides in Altadena with her husband and two children, Hudson and Atticus.
