PASADENA, Calif. — The Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) encourages everyone 6 months of age and older to stay up to date with the 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccination as California sees an increase in COVID-19 activity this season. While hospitalizations remain low, the percent of positive tests for COVID-19 has reached a moderate level and wastewater concentration is at higher levels in several parts of the state.
Although the number of cases is less than last year, the biggest increase is seen in ages 0-4 years and 5-17 years. Staying up to date on the COVID-19 vaccination remains one of the best ways to reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.
Individuals at higher risk for severe illness—such as adults aged 65 and older and immunocompromised persons—should receive two doses of the 2026-2027 COVID‑19 vaccine, spaced six months apart.
"COVID-19 can still cause serious illness; especially in infants, pregnant people, older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems or certain medical conditions,” said Dr. Parveen Kaur, Health Officer. "Getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself from severe illness. If you are at higher risk and develop COVID-19 symptoms, get tested as soon as possible and contact your health care provider.”
If you test positive for COVID-19, oral antiviral medications, including Paxlovid, may help prevent severe illness if they are started as soon as possible, typically within five days of symptoms beginning. Talk with your health care provider to find out if antiviral treatment is right for you.
PPHD also encourages the community to take simple steps to help prevent the spread of illness. Wash your hands often, stay home when you are sick, cover coughs and sneezes, and consider wearing a well-fitting mask in crowded indoor spaces or around people who are at higher risk for severe illness.
