Announcing the Rose Bowl Institute

The Rose Bowl Stadium and the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation announce the exciting launch of the Rose Bowl’s non-profit think tank, the Rose Bowl Institute (RBI). The Institute will champion sportsmanship and leverage the power of sports to unite people everywhere.

More than any other venue in the world, the Rose Bowl Stadium sits in the American psyche as the place where natural beauty, sports competition, sportsmanship, leadership and healthy entertainment lives. Using the iconic stadium as a classroom, with a wide digital footprint and 'sister cities' around the nation, the Institute will engage civic and business leaders, athletes, sportscasters, journalists, children and noteworthy panelists to highlight sports values and their impact on the broader society.

MEET THE PRESIDENT
CHARLIE FIRESTONE

Charlie Firestone is President of the Rose Bowl Institute, which champions sportsmanship and leverages the power of sports to unite people everywhere. Previously, he was a Vice President and Executive Vice President of The Aspen Institute, and for 30 years was the Executive Director of its Communications and Society Program.

Firestone was Director of the Communications Law Program and Adjunct Professor of Law at UCLA Law School. He was also the first President of the Los Angeles Board of Telecommunications Commissioners. Firestone argued two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and many before the U.S. Courts of Appeals as an appellate attorney at the Federal Communications Commission, director of litigation for a public interest law firm, and in private practice in Los Angeles.

Firestone graduated from Amherst College, where he captained the wrestling team, and Duke Law School. He resides with his wife, sculptor Pattie Porter Firestone, in Santa Barbara, California.

RACE AND SPORTS DIALOGUE

Through the Rose Bowl Live virtual platform, a dialogue among Vice Chair of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Sharon Robinson, USA Men’s Soccer legend Cobi Jones, civil rights historian, Taylor Branch and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Ronnie Lott will address (1) the impact of sports on society with respect to attitudes towards race and racism and (2) how sports can improve their policies and practices of racial inclusion and equity.  RSVP now to join us August 13th at 7PM PST!

WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT SYMPOSIUM

September 16-18

The Women’s Empowerment Symposium is an annual three-day program for high school juniors, seniors and college females. Participants learn from female business leaders, athletes, and local and national education leaders within the inspirational setting of the Rose Bowl Stadium. Through the mission of the Institute, topical panel speakers and networking opportunities showcase female leadership, confidence, character, and more. Young female leaders of the future will benefit from the Rose Bowl Institute’s approach to learning from sport’s values and experiences.
