PRESS RELEASE
San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity Accepting Homeownership Applications
From April 1 - April 30.

Monrovia, CA – March 3, 2021 - San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity (SGV Habitat) is once again
welcoming families and individuals to apply for their affordable homeownership program. Applicants
must be first-time homebuyers, demonstrate a need for affordable housing, have the ability to pay an
affordable mortgage, and be able to complete all program requirements.
Selected homebuyers will complete 100 sweat equity hours per adult member of their household
alongside volunteers and also attend approximately 50 hours of homebuyer education courses prior to
purchase. These unique requirements prepare homebuyers for success and have also resulted in a 100%
success rate (no foreclosures or defaults) to date for all current SGV Habitat homeowners.
“We are so happy to be creating transformational opportunities for families and individuals to become
first-time homebuyers at a time when the pandemic has exacerbated housing instability for people
throughout our region,” says Mark Van Lue, Executive Director, SGV Habitat.
Online pre-applications will be accepted throughout the entire month of April. The last day to submit a
pre-application is April 30, 2021. Approved homebuyers will qualify for a monthly housing payment
equal to 30% of their gross monthly income at the time of purchase. This low monthly payment will
provide families with the financial stability necessary to create generational wealth - something the
average low-income renter lacks due to a high cost of living in California that has only worsened since
the pandemic.
“Owning a home in these uncertain times has provided stability for our children. Within the walls of our
home, our children experience safety. This is a gift beyond measure,” says Macha, current Habitat
homeowner in Pasadena.

About San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, a small group of committed volunteers
founded San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity in 1990. Fueled by the generosity of volunteers and
donors, we’ve served over 200 families in our local community and abroad. Families and individuals'
partner with Habitat to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners receive a hand
up, not a handout, as they help build their own homes alongside volunteers. All Habitat homebuyers pay
an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable
housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build
better lives for themselves. To learn more, visit sgvHabitat.org.
