April 8, 2024: Proclamation - Donate Life Month

Whereas, the act of donating an organ, tissue, marrow, or blood is recognized worldwide as an expression of compassion to those in need; a single individual’s organ donation can save up to eight lives, and a  single blood donation can help three people in need; and

Whereas, at this time, more than 20,000 individuals in California and more than 100,000 individuals nationwide are on the national organ transplant waiting list; on average, 17 people die every day while waiting due to the shortage of donated organs, and the need for donated organs is especially urgent in Hispanic and African American communities; and

Whereas, since 1988, hundreds of thousands of transplants have occurred in the United States, and millions of lives each year are saved and healed by donors of organs, tissues, marrow, and blood; and

Whereas, the spirit of giving and decisions to donate are not restricted by age or medical condition, and millions of Californians have signed up with the state-authorized Donate Life California Registry to ensure their wishes to be organ and tissue donors are honored; and California residents can sign up with the Donate Life California Registry when applying for or renewing their driver’s licenses or ID cards at the California Department of Motor Vehicles;

Now, Therefore I, Victor M. Gordo, Mayor of the City of Pasadena, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim April, 2024 in Pasadena as Donate Life Month.
