June 11, 2022: Proclamation - Astronomy Week

PROCLAMATION

Whereas Pasadena is home to some of the world’s leading space, science and astronomical institutions, including Caltech/IPAC, Carnegie Observatories, Giant Magellan Telescope, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Mt. Wilson Observatory, The Planetary Society, and Thirty Meter Telescope; and

Whereas these premier institutions provide world class education, research and exploration in science and engineering; expand our understanding of the universe; enable innovations and discoveries; and inspire future generations of explorers to take on humankind’s greatest technical challenges; and

Whereas these institutions—together with Pasadena City College, Kidspace Children’s Museum, ArtCenter/Williamson Gallery, and PUSD—are partnering to organize Astronomy Week—a series of public events held June 11-17, 2022, (during the week of the 240th meeting of the American Astronomical society, held here in Pasadena)—to promote greater public awareness of Pasadena’s rich astronomical history and celebrate its distinct status as an international leader for telescopic celestial discovery and robotic space science; and

Whereas on June 11, the week’s events will begin with the third Pasadena Astronomy Festival—a free event with family-friendly astronomy activities—and more information on this exciting seven-day celebration of Pasadena’s space, science and astronomical organizations can be found at www.cityofastronomy.org/astrofest-2022;

Now, Therefore I, Victor M. Gordo, Mayor of the City of Pasadena, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim June 11-17, 2022 in Pasadena as Astronomy Week.
