May 20, 2024: Proclamation - National Water Safety Month


Whereas, swimming can play a vital role in maintaining good physical and mental health, building social connections, and enhancing quality of life; and

Whereas, it is important for families and individuals of all ages—whether owners of private pools, users of public swimming facilities, or those visiting recreational swimming areas—to understand the importance of water safety rules; and

Whereas, drowning is often caused by inadequate swimming skills, lack of supervision, and hazardous swimming conditions, and is a leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths worldwide; and

Whereas, water safety awareness and basic swimming skills are crucial to anticipating, avoiding, and surviving common drowning situations, as well as recognizing and providing assistance to those in need; and

Whereas, during the month of May, the City of Pasadena and its Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, Pasadena Public Health Department, Pasadena Fire Department, American Red Cross, local private and public organizations, and communities across the nation are promoting water safety;

Now, Therefore I, Victor M. Gordo, Mayor of the City of Pasadena, on behalf of the City Council do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2024 in Pasadena as National Water Safety Month and encourage all to practice safe swimming habits and use caution around water during the summer season and year-round.
