Proclamation: May 6, 2024 - Anne Frank Day


Whereas, Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager who, along with her family, was forced into hiding from 1942-1944 during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War II (WWII); and

Whereas, chronicling her experiences while in hiding, Anne Frank’s diary was published in 1947, two years after her death in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and since its publication, The Diary of A Young Girl aka The Diary of Anne Frank has been translated into 70 languages, inspired plays, films and other works of art, and has become one of the most widely read books in the world; and

Whereas, her words teach us about the value of democracy, the dangers of prejudice, discrimination and exclusion, and encourage us to see the good in others, stand against injustice, and make positive changes in our communities; and

Whereas, Anne Frank LA is a non-profit organization that creates and presents innovative educational and cultural programs and community events to further the legacy of Anne Frank, to explore the lessons of her life and their meaning for us today, and to honor her father Otto Frank, who was born on May 12th and whose efforts led to the publishing of Anne’s diary; and

Now, Therefore I, Victor M. Gordo, Mayor of the City of Pasadena, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim May 12, 2024 in Pasadena as Anne Frank Day.
