Recreation Amenity Guidance - COVID-19

The City of Pasadena Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) will be reopening certain non-contact amenities and park areas, based on Stage Two of the reopening plan for the City of Pasadena. Pasadena PRCS has modified its operations to reopen these amenities with strict health guidelines to help lower the risk of the spread of COVID-19.  Adherence to guidelines and precautions is critical to safely operate these open facilities.

PRCS is taking precautions to ensure the health and safety of park guests, visitors, staff, and the community and will continue to assess operations daily in consultation with Pasadena Public Health Department and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on necessary safety requirements.

Specific restrictions and safety guidelines required at these park amenities in accordance with the health officer order include, but are not limited to: 

Playgrounds and Fitness Equipment

In accordance with COVID guidelines from the State on Outdoor Playgrounds and Other Recreational Facilities, the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department will reopen outdoor playgrounds and fitness equipment.

  • Visitors to outdoor community playgrounds must comply with the following requirements:
  • Face masks over the mouth and nose are required for everyone 2 years of age or older with caregiver supervision at all times to ensure face mask use.
  • Do not use the playground when different households are unable to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet or when the capacity limit has been reached.
  • Caregivers must monitor to keep adults and children from different households at least 6 feet apart.
  • Consider coming on different times or days to avoid wait times and potential crowded times.
  • No eating or drinking in playground, to ensure face masks are worn at all times.
  • Wash or sanitize hands before and after using the playground.
  • Elderly and persons with underlying medical conditions should avoid playground when others are present.
  • Limit visit to 30 min per day when others are present.

Signage will be posted with COVID-19 protocols at each playground.

Disc Golf 

  • Physical distancing of at least six (6) feet is required at all times.
  • Face coverings are required at all times, when other people are present. Cloth face coverings should not be placed on children younger than 2, or anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated, or unable to remove the cover without assistance. See face coverings FAQ for more information.
  • Bring water and hand sanitizer and/or disinfecting wipes to wash and sanitize hands frequently.
  • Do not visit disc golf course if feeling sick and/or exhibiting any symptoms of illness.
  • Maximum of four (4) players per group.
  • Do not approach the first tee until it is clear of other players.
  • Groups should be at least six (6) feet apart at all times.
  • Each player must supply their own discs. Discs may not be shared.
  • Only one disc allowed in a basket at a time.
  • Consider discs ten (10) feet or closer as a “gimmie.”
  • Retrieve discs without grabbing the basket.
  • Avoid handshakes and high fives.
  • Do not linger on course. Vacate course as soon as your game is complete.
  • No congregating in parking lot before or after play.
  • Users must take their trash with them to protect other course users and staff.

Dog Park 

  • Physical distancing of at least six (6) feet is required at all times.
  • Face coverings are required at all times, when other people are present. Cloth face coverings should not be placed on children younger than 2, or anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated, or unable to remove the cover without assistance. See face coverings FAQ for more information.
  • Bring water and hand sanitizer and/or disinfecting wipes to wash and sanitize hands frequently.
  • Do not gather with people who do not live in your household, including in parking lot.
  • Do not visit dog park if feeling sick and/or exhibiting any symptoms of illness.
  • Do not touch equipment or personal items of others.
  • Do not linger in the dog park. Vacate as soon as the dog has finished exercising.
  • Benches will be cordoned off and are not available for use.
  • Communicate with others as you pass and allow room to safely pass.
  • Users must take their trash with them to protect other dog park users, dogs, and staff.

Rose Bowl Loop

  • Open for pedestrians, runners and cyclists.
  • Practice physical distancing and provide at least six feet of space at all times during your visit.
  • Face coverings should be worn to protect others - even when exercising - as long as your airflow is not restricted.
  • Do not gather in groups.
  • Gather with members of your household only.
  • Communicate with others as you pass. Alert one another when passing by and allow room to safely pass.
  • Users must take their trash with them to protect other loop users and staff.

Trails 

  • Practice physical distancing and provide at least six feet of space at all times.
  • Face coverings should be worn to protect others - even when exercising - as long as your airflow is not restricted.
  • Do not gather in groups.
  • Gather with members of the same household only.
  • Do not visit public trails and trailheads if feeling sick and/or exhibiting any symptoms of illness.
  • Follow all posted regulations on trails and at trailheads.
  • Communicate with others as you pass. Alert one another when passing by and allow room to safely pass.
  • Bring water, hand sanitizer, and/or disinfecting wipes to wash or sanitize hands frequently.
  • Users must take their trash with them to protect other trail users, wildlife, and staff.

Tennis and Pickleball 

  • Physical distancing of six feet must be maintained at all times.
  • Doubles play is now permitted.
  • Each participant must bring their own balls with their initials on each ball. Participants will only be permitted to handle their own tennis balls unless participants are wearing gloves. If gloves are worn, both players can handle the same tennis ball.
  • Participants will be required to wear face coverings at all times except during play.
  • Bring water and hand sanitizer or disinfecting wipes to wash and sanitize hands frequently.
  • A maximum of one-hour play will be allowed.
  • Doors, entrances, and/or gates shall be open during normal operational hours.

Archery Range and Casting Pond 

  • Face coverings will be required at all times.
  • Physical distancing of 6 feet is required all times.
  • Facility operator shall place delineators at sport stations to create a 6-foot distance between participants.
  • Private lessons will be allowed while practicing physical distancing. There shall be no group lessons involving more than 2 people.

Community Gardens

  • Face coverings are required at all times.
  • Physical distancing of six feet is required at all times.
  • Bring hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes, or a resealable bag with soapy water and a washcloth. Wash your hands before and after you go to the garden.
  • Gloves are required while conducting gardening, including while handling tools and equipment.
  • Remove all personal items and trash before leaving the garden.

Equestrian Centers

  • Physical distancing of at least six feet is required at all times.
  • Face coverings are required at all times in crowded areas, including, without limitation, parking lots and stables.
  • Face masks are not required during riding so long as physical distancing is maintained. Facility operator and staff shall wear a face covering and gloves at all times.
  • Rides (Horse string) will be a single file and a maximum of four (4) riders at a time while practicing physical distancing. This is for trail use only.
  • Private horse lessons will require proper physical distancing, and both instructors and students must wear face coverings at all times.
  • Lessons shall be a maximum of two (2) participants at a time and conducted in a round pen. Round pen must be large enough to allow for physical distancing during lessons.
  • Only one (1) horse and one (1) boarder will be allowed within the wash racks at a time.
  • All boarders must use their own wash rack supplies, and hoses will be sanitized regularly.
  • Payment of any fees shall be done online.

General Maintenance Protocols

  • Benches and tables shall be cordoned off to discourage group gatherings
  • Commonly used items will be sanitized regularly
  • Commonly used equipment shall be sanitized before and after each use
  • Restrooms will be sanitized regularly

General Monitoring Protocols

  • Instruction and information signage must be posted throughout the facility regarding infection control, physical distancing and the use of face coverings
  • Facility operator shall monitor compliance of posted restrictions
  • Staff will conduct periodic visits to monitor that players are complying with restrictions
  • Participants will be asked to leave if not complying with these restrictions
