Harlequinade - Pianist

DESCRIPTION

The artist team East Los Streetscapers, under the leadership of Wayne Healy, designed eight Harlequinade sculptures to decorate 25 light poles found throughout Pasadena's Playhouse District. The artist designed each steel wrap with a unique design referencing the brightly-colored diamond shapes of the Harlequin character often found in theater. While these diamond cut-outs represent the comedic character's brightly-adorned costume and mask, the vertical edges of the exterior octagonal cylinder surrounding the light pole symbolize the drape-like movement of the stage curtain. Solar powered lighting illuminates the colorful wraps and beams of light shine through the diamond shapes, adding a glowing element to the Playhouse District at night. Perhaps the epitome of highbrow culture is the concert pianist. The grand piano environment, peopled by a tux-clad master, commands respect.
