"Holey Gates" has two references. One is literal in that the Gates are made of perforated steel. The artist, Susan Landau has an interest in the ways that steel can be made to be transparent and yet retain its strength as a material. For this project, the artist was able to achieve the effect of transparency but also arious patterns of transparencies created by differences in hole sizes and shapes. These differences are subtle and almost dainty which is not what is expected of steel and encountered close up by viewers/visitors to the building. The second less serious reference the artist makes is to the heavenly or "pearly gates" using a play on words of "holy' to "holey".
