Inspired by the modern architecture of the Friend building, Erika Rothenberg designed a work of art that explores the question of what it means to be modern in a historically rich city, such as Pasadena. Her four-panel stainless steel sculpture, Modern Screen, echoes the zigzag roofline of the Friend building, and features elements of architecture and modernism. Upon the panels appears a description about the history of the Friend building, along with images of other Pasadena modernist buildings. The artist's chosen structures include: the original Friend building, the Beckman Auditorium at Cal Tech and the Ambassador College of Fine Art and Science building. Since the back of the sculpture will be only partially visible to passersby, the artist incorporated an elaborate modernist decorative motif, made up of colorful steel panels in myriad shapes.
