The artist team MERGE created Passerby, a series of photographs of different people walking and standing- as seen from above, which cover the bottom side of the four glass canopies. MERGE collaborated with Pasadena's Armory Center for the Arts who organized a community photo shoot for the project. The images of these "passersby" create a hypothetical urban population, as might be found on such a busy intersection as Green and Lake. This installation refers to the fact that living in a city we constantly pass each other, often without acknowledging each other's presence. MERGE constructed the "shadow" of each depicted "passerby", as if each person that is shown on the canopies above was standing in exactly this position on the sidewalk right underneath it. The resulting fake "shadows" were traced and permanently captured by embedding the shadow shapes in the sidewalk using a slightly darker shade of concrete.
