The Thinker

DESCRIPTION

Sitting outside the Norton Simon Museum of Art, Rodin's Thinker represents the vast collection of contemporary art from the museum's early days as the Pasadena Art Museum. According to the museum: "The image of The Thinker is not that of a passive dreamer, but of a man actively engaged in creative thought. Thinking has been expressed not only through the meditative attitude of the body, but through the effort of every muscle. As Rodin said, 'What makes my Thinker think is that he thinks not only with his brain, with his knitted brow, his distended nostrils and compressed lips, but with every muscle of his arms, back and legs, with his clenched fists and gripping toes.'" http://www.nortonsimon.org/collections/browse_title.php?id=M.1970.2.S
