February: Navigating Landlord–Tenant Differences Through Mediation

A smiling woman reaches out to shake hands across a table. Beside the image, a blue graphic reads: “February Tip of the Month — Navigating Landlord-Tenant Differences Through Mediation,” along with the Pasadena Rent Stabilization Department logo.

Disagreements between landlords and tenants can happen, whether it’s about rent payments, maintenance concerns, noise, or lease expectations. Resolving these issues early and respectfully can help preserve positive rental relationships and avoid costly, time-consuming legal actions.

🔹Mediation: A Constructive Option for Conflict Resolution

The City of Pasadena’s Rent Stabilization Department has partnered with the Loyola Center for Conflict Resolution (LCCR) to offer free mediation services for renters and landlords in the community. This collaboration provides a safe, neutral, and confidential space to address housing-related disputes through conversation and mutual understanding.

Professional mediators from LCCR help parties work toward solutions that meet both sides’ needs without going to court.

🔹Why Choose Mediation?

  • Voluntary & confidential: Neither side is obligated to participate or accept the outcome.
  • Professional support: Mediators guide respectful dialogue and help clarify concerns.
  • Cost-effective: Mediation helps resolve issues without the time or expense of court, and it’s free.
  • Community-focused: Solutions build understanding and help maintain stable housing.

Residents interested in using these mediation services may contact the City of Pasadena Rent Stabilization Department directly at RentStabilization@CityOfPasadena.net or speak with a housing counselor. Housing counselors are available to help assess eligibility and connect renters and landlords with the mediation program.
