The construction of the California Boulevard Access & Safety Enhancement project, located on California Boulevard between Drexel Place and Orange Grove Boulevard is scheduled to begin on July 15. The construction is anticipated to be completed by end of the year. The name of the General Contractor is Hardy and Harper, Inc.
Scope
- Modifications to traffic signals to two intersections of California Boulevard and Pasadena Avenue and California Boulevard & Saint John Avenue to accommodate the additional turning lanes and to separate the pedestrian traffic from motorist traffic on the north leg of Pasadena Avenue and California Boulevard
- Installation of new ADA curb ramps at both intersections, and an additional marked crosswalk at the intersection of California Boulevard and Pasadena Avenue, and a curb extension to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians.
- Widening of sidewalk from four feet to nine feet along the north side of California Boulevard from Pasadena Avenue to St. John Avenue and replacement of five-foot-wide sidewalk along the south side of California Boulevard
- Resurfacing of asphalt pavement on California Boulevard between Pasadena Avenue and Orange Grove Boulevard
- Converting a through lane to a shared left turn/through lane for southbound St. John Avenue at its intersection with California Boulevard
- Converting a through lane to a right turn lane on westbound California Boulevard at its intersection with Pasadena Avenue
- And Streetlight enhancement on California Boulevard from Pasadena Avenue to St. John Avenue
Justification
Once the construction is complete, the project would:
- Mitigate the vehicular traffic to reduce queuing;
- Enhance the pedestrian safety along this corridor;
- Promote the use of Fair Oaks Avenue and Arroyo Parkway for vehicular traffic, as an alternative to the residential corridors of Pasadena Avenue and Saint John Avenue.
Funding
This proposed project is funded by the Measure R Mobility Improvement Program Grant by LA Metro.
Construction Updates
The Department of the Public Works will be managing the construction phase of the project and traffic impacts and intermittent ramp closure are expected. Construction will be phased to ensure one travel lane remains open in each direction and access to abutting properties is maintained at all the times.
Additional project information and construction updates will be posted.
